COVID-19 has impacted the life of many workers, and that in turn increased the stress on food banks across the United States. We supported food banks in two regions during this crisis time – Seattle and Chicago. In Seattle, support was extended through Northwest Harvest (www.northwestharvest.org) by sponsoring 50,000 meals at the cost of 22 cents/meal, for a total of $11,000. In the Chicago area, we partnered with The Greater Chicago Food Depository (www.chicagosfoodbank.org) to deliver 30,000 meals at the cost of 33cents/meal, for a total of $10,000. Care & Share raised $10,500 and matched that sum dollar-for-dollar from the general funds to support the growing food challenges in the US.

RADIOS FOR 825 TRIBAL VILLAGES IN WAYANAD, KERALA, INDIA

In Kerala, the district of Wayanad is home to more than 3,000 tribal colonies (hamlets) with a total population of close to 1.5 lakhs (150,000). Most of these hamlets are very remote and do not even use electricity. The main mode of reaching information to these colonies is through the radio channel ‘Mattoli’, which broadcasts information in the tribal language - a mix of Malayalam/Tamil. Each hamlet has at least one ‘Asha’ worker, a health care professional trained by the government health department. People living within a hamlet will either visit the respective Asha worker for information, or the worker will spread the news in the colony. Care & Share equipped Asha workers across 825 villages with radios and enough batteries for at least 2 months. Apart from reaching COVID-related updates, these radios also help residents learn about important lifesaving weather information. Sincere thanks to Dallas-based groups ‘Stand With Kerala’ and ‘Ace Lions Club’ for their contribution towards the successful completion of this project. A total of $7,500 was spent towards the radios and batteries.

75 KIDS RECEIVE TVS FOR ONLINE EDUCATION IN KERALA , INDIA

COVID-19 changed the way schools function all over the world. In Kerala, many classes are delivered online through television with cable support. Many kids struggled with the change, as it was their responsibility to find the required resources for online classes. We worked with ‘Stand With Kerala’ group based in Dallas to support 60 students from the districts of Palakkad, Trivandrum, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kannur. Durga J Nair is a 11th grade student from Sammamish, WA who felt compelled to do something upon coming across the request from a school in Kollam. Fifteen students from the school were struggling to attend online education for lack of a medium. She worked with her parents and friends and arranged an online exhibition of their paintings ranging from a recommended donation of $50—$200. In less than a week, she raised the required funds. Amazing work Durga! Thanks to our partners from Kerala for helping us to distribute television sets in a timely manner. We worked with Don Bosco Veedu Society, Verapoly Diocese Social Service Society, Palakkad Social Service Society, Kottappuram Integrated Development Society and Kannur Don Bosco. A total of $9,000 was spent towards this project.
