Ekadanta, is a dance concert showcasing the ancient South Indian art form of Bharatanatyam and Indian classical music featuring poetry from various Indian languages. This performance is choreographed by House of Kala’s Artistic Director Akhilesh Vadari. The dancers are local middle and high school students from the Greater Seattle region.
Special education is a cause that Care & Share has been supporting since our inception in 1990. In the last five years alone, we have funded over $200,000 towards various special schools in India. We started with supporting Adarsh and Chaithanya from 2015 after learning about them from their well-wishers. If you would like to know more about any of these organizations, please let us know, and we can get you connected.
All of your donations will benefit three schools primarily focused on education and empowerment of kids with special needs.
Chaithanya special school, Palakkad, Kerala
Chaithanya School caters to needs of children with profound disabilities and offers early intervention programs. 149 children attend the school and another set of children receive help through Community Based Rehabilitation(CBR) programs. The average expense for a child is around $30/month. Only 3 children pay full fees. 26 children pay reduced fees. Rest of the kids are served free of cost including medicines, uniform, food, and transportation. 70% of the total costs are funded through donation, 22% from government grants and rest from the fees.

SCIENTIA project at Different Arts Center, Thiruvanathapuram, Kerala
Different Arts Center is a special school cum arts center started by renowned magician Prof Gopinath Muthukad. SCIENTIA is a science program specially designed for differently-abled children to explore their interests in the environmental area. For the very first time in India kids from a special school presented a paper on zero waste in an international conference. Learn More
SCIENTIA program started in 2019 with 25 kids, with a goal to identify such kids every year and train them according to their abilities and interests. Admission didn’t happen in 2020, 2019 kids will graduate in 2021.
Request: SCIENTIA program is in process of streamlining operations by hiring a principal with PhD and defining its curriculum. The lab requires a one-time investment of $ 15K and support for an annual salary of $6K.
Adarsh Charitable Trust, Ernakulam, Kerala
Adarsh Charitable Trust, started as a day care facility in 1998 for a group of differently abled children. Since then, it has earned its present status as a prestigious Centre of Excellence in the domain of training and rehabilitation of children with special needs in Kerala. Adarsh now caters to more than 500 such children and has evolved to provide a comprehensive range of developmental solutions for such children.
On average, the cost involved for one child at Adarsh is around $30 per month. Of the total running cost, 50% comes through donation, 20% through government grants, and rest from the families. Only around 5% of the kids can afford to pay the full fee. Around 60% of the kids pay between 15% and 75%, depending upon their financial status. 35% of students are below the poverty line (BPL) and are served completely free of cost.

Akhilesh “Akhi” Vadari - Bio
Akhilesh “Akhi” Vadari, a Semifinalist for the 2020 Presidential Scholars for the Arts is an 18-year-old professional actor, dancer, choreographer. He is training in Bharatnatyam with esteemed Natyacharyas Sri Renjith Babu and Smt Vijna Vasudevan from Chennai, India. He has directed and choreographed numerous solo and group performances for fundraising, international dance and other events in the greater Seattle area and has performed in other cities across North America. He is a National YoungArts Winner for Dance and has won several awards at the Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival.
Lastly, he has also acted in many professional musical theater shows at the 5th Avenue, ACT and Seattle Children’s Theaters, including Cinderella and Ramayana.
Akhi founded House of Kala, a non-profit organization, with a vision of promoting performing arts among youth and helping children with special needs. Leading a team of dancers consisting of middle and high school students, he has raised over $42,000 in the past 3 years for children with special needs.
Akhi will be starting college this fall in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program in Dance at the prestigious Columbia College Chicago, with partial scholarship.
Dancer Profiles
Anwita Kamath
Anwita Kamath is a freshman at Bothell High and has been learning Bharatanatyam under the tutelage of Guru Smt. Vidyalakshmi Vinod from the age of 6. An all-rounder with achievements in academics at state and national levels, Anwita brings her diverse focus to dance as well, performing different dance styles at multiple venues, supporting charity-related causes.
Anwita tutors young kids in math through a non-profit organization. She recently orchestrated a food-drive for the Northshore Senior Center by raising funds through free dance lessons. Anwita is excited to perform for House of Kala’s Ekadanta project, in partnership with Care & Share, to raise funds for children with special needs.
Anu Dhananjay
Anu Dhananjay, 14 years old, is an eighth grader. She has been learning dance for eight years, of which the past three years have been under the instruction of Smt. Preetha Anand. Anu has performed at various festivals both in India and in the US. She is excited to be part of the Ekadanta dance team working together to raise funds for the care and share charity to support educational projects.
Ayshwaryaa Hariharan
Ayshwaryaa Hariharan is a 16 year-old sophomore at Nikola Tesla STEM High School. She has been learning Bharathanatyam since she was 6 years old, first learning from Smt. Lakshmi Sanjay and continuing with Smt. Preetha Anand. She enjoys giving back to the community, participating in teen-led camps and mini workshops targeted towards teaching young children about a wide range of topics. She is very thankful for the multiple sources of inspiration from her friends, gurus, and mentors, as well as the many wonderful opportunities to perform. She even loves to choreograph her own dances and enjoys performing at multiple events and a variety of programs.
Devika Ajith
Devika is a junior at North Creek High School and has been learning Bharathanatyam for the last 7 years. She is currently studying dance at Upasana Dance Academy and has performed at various fund raising events. She is very enthusiastic about learning more about her culture through dance and takes pride in being able to support social welfare programs by doing what she loves.
Gayatri Nair
Gayatri is a very passionate dancer who began dancing at the age of 5 with Guru. Vidyalakshmi Vinod. Her ardent love for dance brought her numerous stages, the highlight being her Arangettam in 2016. Pursuing academics with the same rigor, she is currently a freshman at Seattle University majoring in cellular and molecular biology. Gayatri is a talented singer and a core member of Seattle Saptaswara, a local band that conducts a live music shows to raise funds for the education and medical needs of underprivileged. As she gears up for her third fundraiser with House of Kala, she is once again excited to perform art for a cause.
Nandika Ajith
Nandika is a 8th grader at Leota middle School and has been learning Mohiniyattam and Bharathanatyam for the last 4 years. She is currently studying dance at Upasana Dance Academy and she had performed at various events including the prestigious Soorya Festival
Nidhi Achanta
Nidhi Achanta is a high school freshman learning Bharatanatyam under the tutelage of Smt. Vidyalakshmi Vinod since she was four years old. She has performed on various stages locally, in Nrityalaya School of Dance’s productions, and in IndianRaga’s Raga Labs. Bharatanatyam has allowed Nidhi to mature her discipline and perseverance, as well as her creativity and connection to Indian culture. Nidhi danced in Skanda: The Invincible, one of Akhi's previous productions, and loved the opportunity to fundraise for Care and Share. Outside of dance, Nidhi enjoys writing, drawing, math, and hanging out with her friends.
Sradha Padiyath
Sradha is a 13 year old and who has been learning bharatanatyam from the early age of 4 under the guidance of Guru Smt. Vidyalakshmi Vinod. She is deeply passionate about dance and has deepened her understanding and love for the art form. She has done many other styles of dance including contemporary and hip hop. Sradha has also participated in dances for the Kerala Association of Washington (KAW). This is Sradha’s first time performing with the House of Kala. She is very grateful to take part in this wonderful project and support Care and Share in helping the people in need.
Vishaka Menon
Vishaka is a sophomore at Bothell High school. She has been learning Bharatanatyam under the esteem tutelage of Guru Vidyalakshmi Vinod from the age of 5. She has danced on multiple stages, and done other forms of dances, but feels most connected to Bharatnatyam as it got her to fall in love with dancing. Vishaka feels grateful for the opportunity to dance with House of Kala and help fundraise for Care and Share. She loves to volunteer and help the community.
