Seattle To Portland - STP 2016

Update

7/18/2016 - Awesome news! KCS Riders finished in style! All of them started together around 3:30AM on 16th from the official start line at University of WA. One day riders finished by 9:30PM on the same day; 18 straight hours with minimal stops! Two day riders covered 116 miles on day one and then stayed at Napavine Elementary School. They started rolling again on 17th morning around 5:30 chasing rest of the 90 miles and reached the finish line by 3:00PM. Thank you riders for all your effort! You also raised a sizeable amount, close to $6,500, for kids who need additional assistance in their life.

We also take this opportunity to call out few people: Kerala Sports Club for all the assistance in forming this team, Roopesh Kelambath for leading the side, Dream Vision Real Estate (Boney Mathew) for being the grand sponsor, Cascade Bicycle Club for organizing such a meticulously planned event, hundreds of volunteers belonging to all sorts of categories, police officers and medical assistance team who took extreme care of the safety of riders, and Napavine School staff for opening the school for our riders to stay, hydrate and freshen up. They also prepared delicious dinner and breakfast. THANK YOU!

Our campaign will be open till EOD 20th. If you are still considering, its not too late!

7/5/2016 - Once again we are teaming up with Kerala Club Seattle (KCS) for a cause! A group of 13 bike enthusiasts will be riding from Seattle to Portland on 16th and 17th of July to support the challenged kids at Adarsh Special School in Kerala, India. For a similar cause KCS riders had raised $6,500 in 2015.

About STP

STP is one of the 10 biggest recreational bicycle rides (206 miles) in the US that has been operating since 1979 to promote biking. The 10,000 registration limit usually caps out within few days! Many of the riders form smaller groups and re-purpose the event to increase awareness about a cause or raise funds for their non-profits.

Our Team

We have a team of 12 volunteers riding this year. Few of the members are aiming to finish in a single day! The rest, in more traditional, 2 days timeframe covering 116 miles on day 1 and 90 miles on day 2. For more than half of the riders, this is their first STP. The team has been practicing since March and has done lot of prep work in taking up this challenge. Various trails and bike friendly commuter routes in Northwest have been their practice sites. We wish them the very best for a safe and successful ride! We also thank Kerala Sports Club for the support, and helping to form this team.

ADARSH SPECIAL SCHOOL

Adarsh Charitable Trust, based in Kureekkad, Ernakulum, focuses on the rehabilitation of kids with cerebral palsy, autism and Down syndrome. They serve close to 350 children through their centers in two locations – Kureekkad and Vyttila. Another 110 kids receive services at home through their community service units. This home based service unit has three teams, with each team consisting of two assistant trainers, one physiotherapist and one special educator.

On average, the cost involved for one child is around INR 2000 ($30) per month. Of the total running cost, 50% comes through donation, 20% through government grants, and rest from the families. Only around 5% of the kids can afford to pay the full fee. Around 60% of the kids pay between 15% and 75%, depending upon their financial status. 35% of students are below the poverty line (BPL) and are served completely free of cost. In order for this organization to function smoothly, close to six and half lakhs (appx $10,000) in donations must be made each month.

Special education is a cause that Care & Share has been supporting since its inception in 1990. We started supporting Adarsh from 2015. We came to know about them through Justin Loveland’s initiatives. Checkout his blog for lot of details about Adarsh. We continue to work with him this year for a resident therapist. More on that here.

Care & Share director Santhosh Nair visited the school in 2015 and it was apparent that school needed more funding to improve the services offered. Feel free to reach out to him (425 770 2595) to know more about Adarsh.

Our STP Goal

For Adarsh to run smoothly, close to INR 6,50,000 ($10,000) should come through donations each month. We would like to extend a hand in that struggle by taking care of school’s one month’s expenses. With supporters like you we are confident that we would be able to meet the goal.
