About Chronic Kidney Diseases in
Kerala Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is
characterized as gradual and permanent loss of kidney
function over a period of time. CKD is often
asymptomatic earlier on. One may not experience any
symptoms with even a 60-70% kidney failure. Patients
with CKD are grouped into five stages, based on
assessment of existing kidney function using the
Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR).

It is extremely important to identify and control co-morbid conditions of CKD as well as treat the complications of CKD itself. Common co-morbidities include diabetes, hypertension, urinary infections, and stones, some of which can be wreaking havoc in other organ systems in addition to the kidneys. Complications of the CKD itself include anemia, low calcium, bone pain, and confusion amongst many others. Controlling and treating both co-morbid conditions and CKD complications is essential to improve the person’s quality of life and to prevent or slow the progression of CKD into dialysis and kidney transplantation.
Every year Care & Share
conducts 4 – 6 medical camps in the Ernakulam, Alleppy and Trichur districts in Kerala. Every camp is attended by 250 – 300 people who do not otherwise have medical care. It is alarming to find virtually 15 – 20% of these groups are discovered to have some degree of CKD.
After cancer, CKD is the most common health problem that affects families in Kerala. According to Cochin Kidney Foundation, there are around 6,000 dialyses done per month in Kochi hospitals alone. Close to 25% of these require financial assistance. For effective treatment, a patient has to undergo two or three dialyses a week, each costing Rs. 1000 (approximately $20 USD). That is Rs 8,000 to 12,000 a month just for the dialyses alone.
Since 2006, Care & Share has been sponsoring 240 dialyses in a year through Cochin Kidney Foundation. With CKD prevalence in Kerala escalating, Care & Share believes that providing a dialyses machine to a small but well-managed rural hospital will obtain far more value to those below the poverty line. We need to raise $15,000 to make this happen. Proceeds from Ganolsavam 2011 will be used towards this cause, and we need vital support from people like you.
By attending Ganolsavam you
are helping a great cause; we request your whole hearted
support.
